As it happened we were, at times, on route of the Tour De France. The towns were festive, with large crowds etc. But out in the countryside, we came to an intersection where there waas a man with a heavily laden bicycle, holding bags, who came running up to our car screaming NOUGAT! NOUGAT! We had NO idea what he was saying, and it scared the shit out of us. We drove off quickly. It was much later we realized he was selling candy.
